Symphony "ohne Worte"

Listening to the famous choral symphony “without words” in an arrangement for two pianos raises a series of very interesting issues that have continued to influence the reception of this peculiar symphony since its premiere in 1824. Among them, undoubtedly, is the relationship between music and poetry, that is, between the symphonic project Beethoven had in mind and Friedrich Schiller’s poem, which listeners have to imagine as they hear the arrangement. It is ultimately a question of exploring the tension Beethoven’s symphonic work creates between the communicative dimension (poetic and political) of the hymn and the ideal of absolute music.
