Pergamon, the Temple of Satan. As capital of the Attalids, the fortress-city of Pergamon was, for more than one century, the most beautiful city of the Mediterranean, with its palaces, temples and gyms in lively terraces. In addition, the sages of his library inspired a few sculptors of first order to create the Altar of Zeus, so praised by Greeks and Romans as hated by early Christians.
