In constructing his works, Wagner also aspired to establish a German mythology in which Das Nibelungenlied and Des Knaben Wunderhorn shared enunciative space with the utopian socialism of Proudhon, the Dionysian sense of Nietzsche and the pessimism of Schopenhauer, as part of the impossible dream of a kind of national and artistic religion: only the beauty of his music would make the illusory materialization of such a mirage possible… Yet Wagner not only transformed music, but the very conception of lyric theatre.
