Nosferatu (1922), by the German director F.W. Murnau, was an unauthorised adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula (1897), which tried to avoid paying the rights to the novel by changing the title. Unfaithful to the plot but in keeping with its distressing atmosphere, it provided a precise demoniacal and perverse image of the vampire that has become emblematic.
