Manuel García was the most outstanding performer of vocal music during the Romantic era. Father of a long lines of singers (like María Malibrán and Pauline Viardot) and a reputed singing teacher, García travelled the world demonstrating a virtuosic style inseparably associated with Rossini’s operas. But he was also a prolific composer, responsible for works that have forged a place in the collective imagination such as his well-known “Aria del contrabandista”. Towards the end of his life, García composed a series of original drawing-room operas, perhaps intended for his pupils to perform, among which is Le cinesi. The work features in this, the sixth time the format Chamber Music Theatre has been presented, in coproduction with the Teatro de la Zarzuela.
