Harmonikale Konstruktion

[27]
Camille Graeser
(1892-1980)
Harmonikale Konstruktion (Harmonical Construction), 1947/51

Oil, tempera on canvas, 15.8 x 29.5 in.
Sammlung DaimlerChrysler

Graeser, who turned to the Zurich Concrete artists in 1933 after destroying almost all of his previous work, soon began creating paintings in which the visual shifting of colored forms are played out on basic monochromatic surfaces. Komplementäre Dislokation displays complementary color contrasts that are isolated from one another. Harmonikale Konstruktion belongs to the group of so-called “loxodromic compositions” – obliquely evolving motifs – that Graeser produced between 1947 and 1955 that deal with the subject of “diagonal shifting.”
