In his “Furniture Sculptures” (FS) series, Armleder fuses abstract painting with everyday objects – items often found by chance, at flea markets for example, that reveal traces of their use. In this work, the central canvas paraphrases the classic American Color Field paintings of artists like Barnett Newman while the lamps, which bring to mind halos, comment ironically on Newman's avowed transcendentalism, further underscored by the employment of the sacred triptych form.
