Archival history: Donation made in 1981 by his children and grandchildren.

Carlos Fernández Shaw was born in Cádiz in 1865. After completing a degree in law, he worked as a journalist and wrote a large number of theatrical works, some of them central to the history both of zarzuela, such as "La Revoltosa", and of Spanish opera, notably "La vida breve". He collaborated with numerous writers of the period, including José López Silva, Carlos Arniches, Ricardo De la Vega and Pedro Muñoz Seca, and in particular with the composers Ruperto Chapí and Amadeo Vives. He died in Madrid in 1911.

Scope and Content: Most of the documents in this collection belong to one or other of the following groups: handwritten and printed works, press clippings, concert programmes, photographs, personal papers and a large collection of correspondence.

Evaluation, selection, removal: Given their historical interest, all the documents are to be preserved permanently, in accordance with Law 16/1985 of 25 June on Spanish Historical Heritage.
