Archival history: All the papers of Gonzalo de Olavide remained in his possession during his lifetime and on his death passed to his children and heirs. In November 2008 his widow, Mrs. Irene de la Torre Gavier, formally handed the composer's archive over to the Foundation's Spanish Contemporary Music and Theatre Library.

Institutional history/biographical sketch: Gonzalo de Olavide (Madrid, 28 March 1934 - Manzanares el Real, Madrid, 4 November 2005), winner of, among others, the National Music Prize in 1987 and the Queen Sofía Musical Composition Prize in 2001,belonged to the generation of composers who, under the name of the "Generation of '51", restored to the Spanish musical world much of the creative spirit that had been dissipated by the Civil War. He studied composition initially under Victorino Echevarría at the Higher Conservatory of Music in Madrid (1956) before continuing his training in Belgium at the Antwerp and Brussels conservatories. He studied under Pierre Boulez and Luciano Berio at the Darmstädter Ferienkurse (1960) and later, between 1964 and 1967, under Karlheinz Stockhausen and Henri Pousseur in Cologne. He lived and worked in Geneva, Switzerland, for twenty years until his return to Spain in 1991.

Gonzalo de Olavide's relationship with the Foundation started with a musical creation grant in 1974 and continued with performances of his works in successive concert seasons. December 1986 saw the premier of his work "Ricercare". This was followed by performances in November 1994, with a tribute concert celebrating his 60th birthday; in October 1999; in January 2003 in the context of the "Aula de (re)estrenos"; in October 2004 in the "Laboratorio de Interpretación Musical (LIM)" cycles; and in November 2005, the month of his death, in the "Medio siglo de Música española contemporánea" concert season.
