Román Gubern

The film historian and essayist Román Gubern (Barcelona, 1934) is Emeritus Professor of Audio-Visual Communication at the Faculty of Communication Sciences at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, of which he was Dean. He was a lecturer and researcher at the University of Southern California, MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and the California Institute of Technology.

He has written several film scripts for directors including Jaime Camino, Leopoldo Pomés and Antonio Mercero, and is the author of over 40 essays about film and audio-visual culture. In 2014 he published a revised and updated edition of his Historia del cine (1969).

He has acted as the President of the Asociación Española de Historiadores del Cine and is a member of the Academia de Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas de España, the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando and the New York Academy of Sciences.

To conclude, Antonio San José will ask Gubern to come up with three proposals that, in his opinion, may help to improve society. The conversation will be accompanied by the projection of videos and images relating to our guest’s career.
