Architectural modernity is portrayed early in Hollywood. The crowd (King Vidor, 1928) is the example of the potential of an urban New York scene. But the great metropolis is not presented in this film as an idyllic setting, but as an alienating space for an individual diluted within the crowd (to which the title refers) in a time when the american dream is about to collapse on the verge of the stock market black tuesday.
