    (Madrid, 1942) He studied Law at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (1964), and holds an MBA from Harvard University (1968). Head of Division at the World Bank, from 1968 to 1977. Founder and President of FRIDA (Foundation for Research and Investment for the Development of Africa) encouraged by the World Bank to help the smallest and poorest countries in Africa. Founder and Honorary President of FRIDE, think tank on international affairs. Founder of the Club of Madrid and the Toledo International Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution (CITpax). President of DARA. Founder of Foundation Maimona. Former Advisor to the Commission of the United Nations of Legal Empowerment of the Poor. Founding Member and Senior Fellow of the Gorbachev Foundation of North America. Member of the Advisory Committee, Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. Co-founder of the largest Spanish daily, El País, in 1972. Until July 2012, Member of the board of directors of PRISA. Founding member of the European Council on Foreign Relations. Member of the Board of the Kofi Annan Foundation. Since 2002, Fellow of the World Academy of Art and Sciences.

    Awarded with the Great Cross of the Order of Civilian Merit, Spain, 2002. Raymond Georis Price 2008 for Innovative Philanthropy in Europe. In 2009, Commitment to Development Award from the Center for Global Development, in the USA. Gold Medal of the University of Extremadura.

    He has published El futuro de España (1996), which was on the list of the top ten selling books in Spain for 23 weeks, and Europe: Globalization and Monetary Union (1998, Spanish edition also available).
