This series deals with figures as distant in time as united in their adventurous spirit. Beginning in the 4th century BC with Alexander the Great (considered by some historians as humanity’s most important conqueror) and stretching until the twentieth century with the ocean explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the list of famous figures also features the Venetian merchant Marco Polo, the conquistador Hernán Cortés, the German explorer and geographer Alexander von Humboldt, the biologist author of the theory of evolution Charles Darwin, the British doctor and missionary David Livingstone and the British anthropologist, writer and army officer Lawrence of Arabia.

Prominent historians, geographers, biologists, archaeologists and writers portray the universal history of travel from different angles and perspectives based on the stories and experiences of some of their most prominent literary characters and expeditions.
