Special concertClosure of the 2020-21 Season. England's Orpheus: Songs for lute

Iestyn Davies and Thomas Dunford

Works by H. Purcell, R. de Visée, G. F. Händel, J. Dowland, G. G. Kapsperger, G. A. Dalza and M. Marais

“England’s Orpheus”. This was the epithet that John Dowland, Henry Purcell and George Friderich Handel all received. The former is today seen as the epitome of lute song during the Elizabethan era. This genre attained renewed splendour with Henry Purcell who, from 1690 onwards, explored new accompaniments with the ground bass and bass ostinato. In turn, George Friderich Haendel took the spirit of Italian opera and cantata with him to London, and together with Purcell made a fundamental contribution to music theatre through genres such as opera, oratorio and the ode. The program also includes a reflection on the influence the French Baroque had on the island, with compositions by the lutenist Robert de Visée and the viola de gamba player Marin Marais.
