Lluís Homar in dialogue with Antonio San José
The actor and theatre director Lluís Homar (Barcelona, 1957) studied at the Instituto del Teatro in Barcelona. In 1974, in conjunction with other actors, he founded the Sociedad Cooperativa del Teatre Lliure in Barcelona, of which he was artistic director from 1992 to 1998 and took part in over thirty productions. That same year he also became part of the Teatro Escorpio group and participated in Othello, directed by Ángel Carmona.
His film debut came with Francesc Betriu’s La plaza del diamante (1982) and he has worked with directors including Agustí Villaronga (El niño de la luna), Pilar Miró (El pájaro de la felicidad), Mario Camus (Después del sueño, Adosados and La ciudad de los prodigios), Pedro Almodóvar (La mala educación and Los abrazos rotos) and Montxo Armendáriz (No tengas miedo). In 2012 he was awarded the Goya for Best Supporting Actor and the Gaudí prize for his performance in Kike Maíllo’s Eva (2011).
Some of his most important roles in the theatre were in Terra Baixa, Quiriquibú, Play Strindberg, The Crucible, Richard III, Cyrano de Bergerac and Monsieur Linh and His Child. In 2006 he was awarded the Premio Nacional de Teatro (National Theatre Prize) from the Generalitat de Catalunya for his role in Thomas Bernhard’s Der Theatermacher, directed by Xavier Albertí. He was also the recipient of two Premios Max and one Fotogramas de Plata for the best theatre actor and two Premios Butaca, among other accolades. Among his work as a theatre director are productions of Hamlet, Luces de bohemia, Paradero desconocido, El arte de la comedia and The Marriage of Figaro.
He has also worked in television series such as Àngels i Sants, Hispania, la leyenda, Imperium (for which he received the Best Actor award from the Academia de Televisión in 2012) and Gran Hotel, among others.
In 2019 he was appointed Director of the Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico.
