Bach's Prelude of the English Suite No. 2

Pierre Hantaï, harpsichord

Johann Sebastian Bach: “Prelude” from the English Suite No. 2

It is very likely that Bach composed his six English Suites around 1715, while he was working at the Weimar court. Influenced by French lute music in their form and the inclusion of a prelude in each suite, they were named the “English” suites because they had supposedly been composed for an English nobleman. As was standard practice in Bach’s time, Pierre Hantaï improvises an introduction before performing the vigorous “Prelude” from the English Suite No. 2.
