Amadís de Gaula and Chivalresque Literature
Mª Carmen Marín Pina
Don Quixote’s favourite book and the cause of his madness, Amadís de Gaula is the paradigm of chivalric romances, “the best sellers of the sixteenth century”, according to Mª Carmen Marín Pina. Grouped into series of books, written by various authors and subjected to constant processes of rewriting and updating since the Medieval period, they narrate the life and military and amorous adventures of the archetypal hero, in a fantastic tone and in keeping with the courtly values of the period: honour, faith and loyalty to the king. In Don Quixote Cervantes would parody several of the clichés of the genre, such as the found manuscript or love letters.
