Spectres, mysterious disappearances and a strong sense of aesthetic feature in the four melodramas Franz Liszt composed during his lifetime. The melodrama, which emerged during the eighteenth century, is a theatrical genre in which the spoken action is superimposed on the music, the latter functioning as a structural and expressive element.
