Debussy: Gardens in the rain

Pascal Rogé, piano

Jardins sous la pluie, by Claude Debussy

Claude Debussy dedicated the collection Estampes to the artist and writer Jacques-Émile Blanche. In his memoirs, Blache recalled that Jardins sous la pluie was inspired by a stormy afternoon when he sketched the composer’s portrait. “It was raining, and the trees gave a green tinge to his dark skin, which the rain seemed to varnish”. The March downpours were evoked with extraordinary precision in this piece, which identified with Impressionist painting.
