Aphrodisias, the city of the most beautiful marble sculptures
The Professor of Latin Philology Antonio Alvar takes us on a journey through the excavation and the extraordinary marble statues of Aphrodisias. This city, an example of the Roman apogee in a community from the Hellenic tradition, stands out for its surprising economic and cultural prosperity. It boasted two agoras, a large-scale theatre, a stadium, several places of worship devoted to Aphrodite and the academy–which some attribute to philosophers, and others, to sculptors. Alvar explores the streets and most important monuments such as the Tetrapylon, paying particular attention to the Sebasteion temple, a monument dedicated to the imperial dynasty of Augustus.
