Osip Mandelstam: Against all Hope
Russian Jewish-Polish poet, storyteller and translator Osip Mandelstam studied in St. Petersburg, Paris and Heidelberg and maintained close ties with important writers such as Pasternak, Akhmatova and Bulgakov. Tamara Djermanovic, professor of Slavic aesthetics and literature at Pompeu Fabra University, discusses the life and work of this writer who captured the injustice and tragedy of Stalinist repression in his writing. As his widow Nadiezhda stated in her book of memoirs Against All Hope: "The main and immutable characteristic of Russian history is that for both the warrior and the non-warrior, any path poses a threat to their life".
