The pre-Roman peoples of the Basque Country

Martín Almagro Gorbea

The historian and specialist in the Protohistory of the Iberian Peninsula and Western Europe, Martín Almagro Gorbea, analyses the complex origin of the Basque people, based on the combination of several scientific studies, such as archaeology, linguistics and, more recently, genetics. The analysis of the different identity elements is approached, primarily, from the evolution of the language, urbanistics and society of Celtiberian form and the interaction between the different people, and contrasted with earlier mythical visions. To conclude, he underlines the importance of having an interest in history and taking note of new discoveries, declaring: “getting to know our past is our collective memory”.
