Tartessos: A historical reality

Sebastián Celestino

The archaeologist and Director of the Instituto de Arqueología-Mérida at the CSIC Sebastián Celestino presents a historigraphical journey through Tartessos, based on philological studies and paying particular attention to archaeological research carried out from the 1950s onwards. The Tartessian remains found –including cemeteries and santuaries– reveal the social organisation of this culture, a combination of indigenous roots and oriental influences, which had to move from its nucleus situated in the Guadalquivir valley to the Guadiana valley, as a result of the crisis that occurred in the mid-sixth century BC. The recent work carried out at the “Casas del Turuñuelo” archaeological site (Badajoz) is located in the latter.
