Instrumental Rarities: the claviorgan

Andrés Cea, claviorgan

Works by A. Cabezón, O. Gibbons and J. Cabanilles

The claviorgan is an instrument that combines the mechanisms of sound production of the harpsichord and the organ. Often the bodies of both instruments are superimposed and connected. Its use was already documented in Spain and Italy at the end of the fifteenth century, although it spread to the rest of Europe during the sixteenth century. Although it does not have a specific repertory, this video includes some Spanish, Italian and English keyboard works of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, which reveal its timbral capabilities.
