Schubert’s Piano: the Ländler
Alexander Lonquich, piano
Franz Schubert (1797-1828): Ländler D 790; Wolfgang Rihm (1952): Ländler
Prior to the international expansion of the waltz, Ländler were the most common dances in Austria, south Germany and German Switzerland. With its characteristic 3/4 time, the genre went from its original rural context to the refined salons of Vienna, to a large extent through Schubert, remaining in collective ideas about sound to the present day.
