Women, maternity and citizenship in Ancient Rome

Rosa María Cid

"From ancient Rome emanate models [of womanhood and motherhood] that have marked the history of the West," said Rosa Maria Cid, professor of ancient history at the University of Oviedo, at this conference. Cornelia, Livia and Agripina are the three Roman women that the lecturer uses as a reference: women citizens or "matrons", privileged and virtuous Romans who were exemplary in their time and in later ones. Rosa Maria Cid also deals with other models of the feminine and maternal, inside and outside the norm.
