"Introduction" for String Sextet, from Capriccio Op. 85, by Richard Strauss (1864-1949)

The opera Capriccio, premiered in 1942, poses an original disjunctive: what is more important, words or music? Set in the eighteenth century, the operatic story includes the performance of a musical piece, the reading of a poem and the performance of a stage play. Capriccio begins with a sonatina for sextet that is completely independent and which was performed for the first time, in private, before the opera.
