Universalism and the idea of constant progress defined the philosophy of the Enlightenment. In contrast to this perspective, the Romantic mentality focused on the subjunctive and the emotions, seeking the essential features that define the spirit of nations. Paradoxically, the same features of the Spanish black legend that the Enlightened scholars considered signs of Spanish backwardness, went on to be positively valued by travellers that sought the essence of Romanticism in Spain.
