Composed in the last year of his life, the quartets of C. P. E. Bach give the accompanying keyboard its own life. It takes on the viola da gamba/harpsichord duality of the Baroque continuo, in contrast to the sonata for three instruments and continuo that was the quartet at the beginning of the eighteenth century. In this video, the contrapuntal style of J. J. Quantz’s String Quartet No. 1 in D major contrasts with the original, almost symphonic texture of C. P. E. Bach’s String Quartet in G Major H 539.
