The Olympic Games in Ancient Greece

Fernando García Romero

Based on the description of these sports competitions by the spectators and from literary texts, the professor of Greek Philology Fernando García Romero describes the social phenomenon of the Olympic Games, explaining the religious and cultural reasons that originated the trips to these sanctuary cities, mainly to Olympia and Delphi. The lecturer refers to the testimonies of the visits to the Olympic Games of famous philosophers and writers -such as Plato, Diogenes Laercio, Herodotus or Ariano- to illustrate the interest and conditions in which these sports competitions took place.
