The battle of Marathon: myth and landmark in the Occidental world

Fernando Quesada Sanz

How much myth is there in the victory of the Athenians—along with the Plataeans—over the Persian army in the battle of Marathon (490 B.C.)? Fernando Quesada Sanz, Professor of Archaeology at the Autonomous University of Madrid, analyzes the battle by contrasting the sources and historical narratives of the events with modern research. The Athenian myth around the battle of Marathon has survived in the image that "if Persia had won in Marathon and Athens had aborted its political system, the world would have been very different", in the words of the lecturer.
