19th-century Spanish piano: Santiago de Masarnau

Josep Colom, piano

Works by S. de Masarnau, F. Chopin, R. Schumann and F. Mendelssohn

Santiago Masarnau acquired a deep knowledge of the musical currents of his time thanks to his extended stays in Paris and London in the 1820s and 1830s. This video presents his most outstanding compositions, including the Trois morceaux expressifs Op. 18 (1840) and the Fantasie Op. 21 (1842). The latter, dedicated to Johann Baptist Cramer, is one of the most ambitious pages of Spanish piano music of the first half of the 19th century.
