Why the Balearic Islands? (II): Ibiza, 1930s: amid travellers and tourists

Vicente Valero

Between 1930 and 1936 Ibiza was visited by many young people who were just starting out in their intellectual and artistic disciplines -Walter Benjamin, Albert Camus, Jacques Prévert, Wols and Gisèle Freund, among others- together with artists with established careers, such as Raoul Hausmann. From the photographs of Hausmann or Wols, the landscapes of Esteban Vicente and the influences of the local rural housing in Josep Lluís Sert and Germán Rodríguez Arias, to cite some examples, the Ibizan writer Vicente Valero presents how several of these travelers and tourists studied and portrayed the island in search of an archaic world and a simplicity of forms.
