Why the Balearic Islands? (III): The misfit cousin of Sisi collects beetles. The enigmas of the "Arxiduc"

Carme Riera

The writer, academic and emeritus professor of the Autonomous University of Barcelona Carme Riera presents in this lecture one of the most outstanding figures in his relationship with the Balearic Islands, Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria (Florence, 1847 - Bohemia, 1915). Belonging to the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty, he found in the north of Mallorca "a small kingdom" to which he would contribute with his study and work, whose legacy can be found in works such as Die Balearen, the restoration and construction of his estates, as well as viewpoints and trails, the conservation of the native landscapes, the patronage of various local scientific projects and the vindication of Ramon Llull and his work; all of them fundamental actions to make the islands known in Europe.
