Why the Balearic Islands? (IV): Chopin and George Sand or the romantic spirit on a visit to Mallorca

José Carlos Llop

The poet and writer José Carlos Llop recounts the trip to Mallorca, in the winter of 1838, of Federico Chopin and George Sand along with her two children, Maurice and Solange. The background and circumstances of their stay, George Sand's travelogue A Winter in Majorca or the island as a compositional inspiration for Chopin—here he composed his Prelude No. 4 Op. 28—are some of the subjects discussed in this lecture. In the words of the lecturer, this was "the first cultured trip to Mallorca".
