Intellectual Autobiography of Margarita Salas

Margarita Salas in conversation with Soledad Puértolas

In her intellectual autobiography, Margarita Salas converses with Soledad Puértolas. This is a conversation between two academics: a scientist and a writer, symbolising the ability and duty of the sciences and humanities to communicate with each other. Margarita Salas retraces her childhood and her experiences as a woman dedicated to scientific research. “A country without research is an undeveloped country”, she says, reiterating and sharing the thinking of Severo Ochoa, her teacher. Soledad Puértolas skilfully draws out her literary, musical and artistic tastes — the human side of this scientist, who prefers the scenery of her native Asturias to any other place in the world.
