Giuseppe Verdi: Inventing the Truth

Gabriel Menéndez Torrellas

Here, Verdi’s operas are analysed from the viewpoint of their musical-aesthetic innovations. Drawing on excerpts from Nabucco, Macbeth, Rigoletto, La Traviata, Simon Boccanegra, Don Carlos, Requiem and Otello, Gabriel Menéndez Torrellas portrays Verdi as the great dramatist of the Gesamtkunstwerk (total artwork), representative of the great maestros of world literature and his time, transferring the historical, political and religious conflicts of the period to his works; and formally, as the maestro of direct language, orchestral transparency and the search for new sounds.
