Clara Wiek stood out in improvisation, which was common practice in nineteenth-century recitals. Éric Le Sage reflects this custom, performing the second movement of Robert Schumann’s Piano Sonata No. 3 preceded by the improvisation (transcribed around the end of his life) Clara usually played before it. Although Robert believed Clara had created the sonata’s theme (as the title of the movement suggests), it is actually present in some of his earlier works.
