Presentation of Asphalt (1929)

Pedro G. Cuartango

In Pedro García Cuartango’s opinion, “Asphalt”, a UFA big-budget movie premiered in 1929 is “not only a masterpiece of silent film, but of twentieth-century cinema”. The film disappeared during World War II and was rediscovered in 1993 in Moscow, in the archives of the Soviet film library. The film’s director, Joe May, was a pioneer in the genre that would later become known as film noir; a “thriller” with touches of humour and eroticism.
