Felix Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words (Lieder ohne Worte) are small-scale pieces with a high level of technical difficulty whose aim is to transfer the expressiveness characteristic of vocal genres to the piano. Immersed in nineteenth-century rhetoric that considered music the language of the ineffable, Mendelssohn declared that they transmit “a feeling that cannot be expressed in words”. This expressiveness is reinforced by Brautigam’s performance, presented on a fortepiano that reproduces a period model, and whose sound is more velvety and less brilliant than that of the modern piano.
