The origins of the bolero date back to the late-eighteenth century, when composers from all over Europe began to recreate popular music in their own works. In Spain, purist majismo would consider the bolero a mode of musical expression with which to bring dandies and toffs, that is, the followers of foreign trends, face to face. The humorous texts, full of double entendres and suggestive insinuations, would convert these small-scale works, conceived to be sung with guitar accompaniment, into an emblem of Spanishness in music. In this video, Marta Almajano and Ernesto Mayhuire perform, aside from an anonimous bolero and Pedro Tirado's Fuga, three seguidillas boleras by Fernando Sor, a composer whose contribution was decisive in the circulation of this genre throughout Europe.
