History of the Lied: Vienna, A Century Later

Luis Gago

Works by G. Mahler, A. Berg and A. von Zemlinsky

In this video, the sixth in the series entitled The History of Lied in Seven Concerts, Luis Gago reveals some of the keys to understanding the Lieder outputs of Gustav Mahler, Alexander von Zemlinsky and Alban Berg. The presenter uses a large number of musical and visual examples to reconstruct the fascinating world of music in Vienna at the beginning of the twentieth century, a period of profound aesthetic changes in the Lied whose epicentre was the city that, one hundred years earlier, had witnessed the birth of the genre.
