C.P.E. Bach: Moderato of Württemberg Sonata
Ottavio Dantone, harpsichord & Tamar Beraia, piano
Moderato of Württemberg Sonata no. 1 in A minor, by C.P.E. Bach
Harpsichord or piano? From a historical viewpoint, the most appropriate instrument for performing Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s music is the harpsichord. However, his Sonatas were composed during the period the piano began to develop. A comparative listening of the same work on the two instruments reflects the expressive richness of the creations of this composer, associated with the Empfindsamer Stil (“expressive style”). Dantone’s reading on the harpsichord, majestic and placid, contrasts with the energetic and precise articulation of Beraia on the piano.
