Messiaen's Petites esquisses d'oiseaux

Markus Bellheim, piano

Petites esquisses d'oiseaux (selection) by Olivier Messiaen

Apart from a composer, Olivier Messiaen was a renowned ornithologist who often went into the countryside to record and transcribe birdsong. The French composer used these songs as the basis for Petites esquisses d’oiseaux, a collection of six short pieces that also demonstrated his synesthetic approach. The work was premiered by Yvonne Loriod, the composer’s wife, in 1987.
