Presentation of Tire au flanc (1929)
A military vaudeville based on the famous theatrical work by André Sylvane and André Mouézy-Éon, Manuel Hidalgo points to a “certain Chaplinesque air” in the crazy ideas and jokes that make up his brand of humour. The editing maintains the sense of theatre in its structure by scenes and captions, while the continuous movements of the camera express the rhythm and vigour characteristic of the cinematographic world. The film dates from the early filmography of the French director Jean Renoir, who formed part of the movement known as “poetic realism”, with titles including Les bas-fonds (1936), La grande illusion (1937) and La règle du jeu (1939).
