Jordi Savall's Intellectual Autobiography
Jordi Savall
Jordi Savall’s earliest musical memories go back to his childhood, to his mother’s love, transmitted in lullabies. He learnt to sing in his school choir, but it was after hearing Mozart’s Requiem that he decided to become a musician. He bought his first violoncello with the savings from his job in a weaving mill, and taught himself to play it, but the discovery of works by M. Marais, F. Couperin, A. Forqueray, etc., led him to swap the cello for the viola da gamba. Together with his wife Montserrat Figueras, who passed away in 2011, he has devoted his professional career to rescuing and updating early music, with a view to promoting its modernity.
