Presentation of Das Kabinett des Dr. Caligari (1919)

Román Gubern

According to Román Gubern, the appearance of the idea of the lack of safety and the possibility of anonymity in big cities are the sociological foundations of the creation of the detective genre. Crime and science, crime investigation, the enigma of “whodunit”, mystery and anxiety, all of which are central motives in any detective novel, are present in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, which examines the disturbing world of experiments with hypnotism. The film was the first in the Expressionist movement, visually inspired by German Expressionism, with its style based on the contrast of lights and shadows, very heavy make-up and theatrical sets.
