Rameau's Chaconnes

Jean-Philippe Rameau: "Chaconne", from Dardanus and "Chaconne" from Les Indes Galantes

The chaconne, which had been subjected to no end of criticism due to its immoral nature, underwent a transformation after becoming part of the galant and courtly France of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Rameau didn’t hesitate to include elegant chaconnes in his tragédie-lyrique Dardanus and at the end of his opéra-ballet Les indes galantes.
