Ageing and Sustainability

María Ángeles Durán y David Reher interviewed by Antonio San José e Íñigo Alfonso

The Burning Issue

The sociologists María Ángeles Durán and David Reher analyse issues including pensions, retirement and public policies in regard to the sustainability of the trends towards an ageing population. María Ángeles Durán introduces the gender inequality present in the relationships between elderly people into the debate, as according to her studies, "83% of the care of the significantly dependent is carried out by women "; on the other hand, David Reher emphasises the need to reverse the present trend by promoting the birth rate. Both coincide in pointing out the importance of highlighting the productivity and social importance of the elderly.
