A major commercial success in the United States, where it was even banned in various states, according to Antonio Giménez-Rico, this melodrama by Cecil B. DeMille is characterised by its precision and austerity, based on a great deal of narrative talent despite the few resources available at the time –a lack of title cards, the shortage of actors, and a limited duration. The sets are the creation of disturbing atmospheres by means of an illumination with an abundance of chiaroscuro and shadows, and a predominantly theatrical style of production and acting.
